Holt

There’s plenty to do outdoors in the village as well as in the pub grounds. There’s an award winning butchers in Holt village, plus Nogi the quaint curiosity and gift shop. You’ll find a welcome in all the places of interest around Holt and across the River Dee in Farndon.

Historically though, relations haven’t always been so friendly! The 13th Century Holt-Farndon bridge was the scene of many a skirmish. St Chad’s church (behind the pub), complete with musket holes, played host to Oliver Cromwell’s troops during the Civil War.

Nearby Holt Castle, whose remains can still be seen sitting peacefully on the banks of the River Dee, was also the subject of sieges during the Civil War and in the 14th Century Owain Glyndwr uprising.

For the geologists there are two SSI - Sites of Scientific Interest - at the Dee cliffs and at Holt Castle. The footpaths are well maintained, with walks along the banks of the Dee and the surrounding countryside.

A leaflet is available for easy guidance around Holt.
